Montenegrin Sculptor Mijo Mijuskovic

Mijo at work

Montenegrin Sculptor Mijo Mijuskovic was born in Niksic, Montenegro in 1931 and has more than half a century of creative work. He has had individual exhibitions in all major cities in Europe and one can find his sculptures in numerous world galleries.

Here is what one critic wrote about him: "Mijo Mijuskovic is a sculptor of high breeding, who has elected to conspire with Nature. So two sculptors of breeding found themselves on the same job. It is unknown to us who is the better, and we shall never know, as both of them, lacking in vanity, contributed to the same work. The difference between them is that the sculptor called Nature requires millions of years to contour its stone piles, structures and forms of miraculous colors, whereas Mijo only needs moments of inspiration, stirred-up imagination and work, to discover the yet undiscovered, observe the unseen, and bestow beauty with a human touch. He starts where Nature finished its primeval game. Whatever Nature built or destroyed the sculptor accepts as a prelude. He does everything to illuminate and awaken forms which were covered with the alluvium of time, and make obvious that the earth is alive and full of aesthetic projection, whether we are aware or not."

Worship of stones is the oldest religion. Mijo's sculptures, monumental combinations of polished and untouched stone, are poems in stones that you read with a touch of hand or lingering gaze.
